Bonaire diver volunteer projects
Coral Reef Restoration
Did you know that 2 years ago Bonaire introduced a Coral Reef Restoration program ?
If you are visiting our beautiful Island of Bonaire as a diver, and would like to volunteer, you can! Contact the staff at Buddy Dive Shop for information.
It’s a great project and so far the only one in the Caribbean. A unique way to have fun while diving and give back to the environment at the same time.
Elkhorn and staghorn coral were once common in the Caribbean Sea, but numbers declined over the 30 years and are becoming critically endangered.
As of today more than 6000 coral fragments are growing in the nurseries in Bonaire and almost 1000 have been already transplanted on the reef.
Debris Free Bonaire
Another great program we encourage you to volunteer for is Debris Free Bonaire, supported by Dive Friends Bonaire.
Debris Free Bonaire is a new environmental program that encourages visitors of Bonaire to volunteer a small amount of their vacation time to collect plastic marine debris from Bonaire’s east coast.
Visit any Dive friends location and receive a debris collecting bag. Take a scenic drive to the east coast of Bonaire and start filling it with all the plastic you can find.
Bring back your bag to Dive Friend at the Hamlet Oasis location where they keep track of the debris collected.
